What is a Supporters Trust?

Supporters Direct offer the following definition of a Supporters Trust: "The basic definition of a Trust is a democratic, not-for-profit organisation of supporters, committed to strengthening the voice for supporters in the decision making process at a club, and strengthening the links between the club and the community it serves."

Why do we need a Supporters Trust at Rochdale?

Well that's the magic question. We believe a Supporters Trust has just as vital a role to play at Rochdale as it does at any club throughout the United Kingdom. We see the role of Dale Trust as being whatever the members of the Trust want it to be, with the Trust following the direction offered by its members. We see a Supporters Trust being a very positive organisation, which whilst retaining our independence, can make a real and positive difference to Rochdale Football Club and its supporters.

What is the difference between a Supporters Trust and a Supporters Club?

We see the role of Dale Trust as being everything that a Supporters Club can be, plus an awful lot more. We see the Trust fulfilling the role of a Supporters Club by arranging monthly events throughout the year. We will be responsible for organising the Fans Forums (in association with the board of directors) and other social occasions for Dale fans. We see ourselves of continuing the fund raising that the Supporters Club has taken on before. We all have memories of the work done for the Tractor Fund where thousands of pounds were raised - we see that as being a prime example of what could be achieved, and with a prolonged, sustained effort. However, the members of the Trust would have the say on where the proceeds of any fund raising were spent.

Furthermore, we see the Trust being a direct link between the club and its supporters. We have arranged to have monthly meetings with the board of directors, where we can offer suggestions from our members and raise concerns that supporters have about any aspect involving Rochdale Football Club.

Does a Supporters Trust mean that we are heading for financial breakdown?

No. We at Rochdale Football Club are in a very fortunate position that we have not incurred the debts that other clubs have due to sound financial management over the years by the board of Directors, but we cannot always take this for granted. Like any other team in Division Three, we are potentially only ever one season away from the Conference, which would be a devastating blow to the club's finances. There'd be a loss of TV money, loss of gate revenue as the crowds are reduced, and it would be increasingly difficult for us to maintain the current levels of revenue received through sponsorship. In addition, reduced crowds would lead to lower sales of Golden Gamble tickets, sales of merchandise. Even the number of pies sold on matchdays would be reduced. And all of this is just potentially one season away.

Additionally, we are also potentially just one season away from Division Two (like we have been for the past thirty years!). Football at a higher level would encounter much higher running costs, bringing with it a whole new set of problems. Having a Supporters Trust in place means that there would be no need for any immediate panic. Rather than racing around, with one of those "Four weeks to save the club" deadlines that we hear so often in the media. A Trust in place could start increasing fundraising efforts at an earlier stage, and give play a pivotal role in such proceedings.

Can I have a say how the trust is run ?

Yes the trust is a democratic body and its actions are governed by its own constitution. The trust will hold regular meetings and an annual AGM to consult its members, and will have to undertake an annual audit. The vision for the trust is that it's direction will be decided by its members, as will be its success. Each member has one vote.

What can I do if I don't think the Trust is being run well?

Well first and foremost, if you don't like something that is being done, and you have an idea about how something can be done better, then say so. The Trust is not a clique or any sort of closed shop, where only the thoughts of a certain few are considered. All opinions are taken on board, and if there is anything we can take on board to improve matters, then let us know so we can make the necessary improvements.

If after all that, you are still unhappy with the running of the Trust, then each year you have the chance to get rid of us. Elections are held every year for the Committee members. There's no need for bed sheets at the back of the stand, if you don't like how it's being run, then you can vote us out!

The Frequently Asked Questions section will be updated as the Trust progresses, or as we get.....er.......frequently asked questions about the running of the Trust.
