Swamped by a tide of red and blue? Surrounded by Hatters, Railwaymen and Silkmen? Then help is at hand through the South Manchester and Cheshire (SMAC) branch of the Rochdale Supporters Trust. Established for the benefit of exiled Rochdaleians and other true football supporters who have, the for reasons possibly best known to themselves, chosen to align themselves to the Dale cause.
Supporting the Dale in SMAC territory can sometimes feel a lonely and isolated experience not helped by the reputation the Dale have got as perennial underachievers and, on the rare occasion the media spotlight turns it's attention on the Dale, the tedious concentration on the usual suspects. However, if you do feel on your own in these remote(!) parts, fear not, for you're not on your own.
SMAC has been operating on an informal basis since the 2002/03 season, and the list of contacts already cover Altrincham, Holmes Chapel, Chorlton (South Manchester), Old Trafford (we kid you not) and Salford. And there are more of you out there - there has been an anorak-like tendency developing for spotting Dale shirts in unexpected locations. So if you are the paperboy in Ashton-on-Mersey; the Dale fan who (legend has it) gets the tram from Old Trafford: or were on the streets of Timperley on the evening of the home game against Kidderminster - get in touch!
The SMAC area is broadly south Manchester, Stockport, (south) Tameside, Trafford and the county of Cheshire (or postcode areas CH, CW, M (some), SK (some) and WA. However, we are not going to exclusive about this and we welcome any Dale fans on the periphery of this area to get in touch.
So what is SMAC all about? We hope that SMAC provides
- An opportunity for Dale supporters in the SMAC area to meet
- An opportunity to make arrangements for matchday travel - see SMAC Travel Network
- Events for SMAC members and other football supporters
- Support to Rochdale AFC by fundraising or sponsorship
